About This Screening

Margaret Rorison is an artist from Baltimore, Maryland where she is also a curator and co-founder of the screening series Sight Unseen. Through her films and installations she consistently engages with the themes of landscape, memory, nostalgia, family, and loss. In One Document for Hope, it is the post-industrial landscape of her hometown Baltimore reeling after the loss of Freddie Gray while in The Waiting Sands it is the eternally intertwined themes of family and loss through the voice of her grandfather. Rorison also works at the intersection of site and art, as in her hauntingly beautiful piece PULL/DRIFT made in collaboration with the dance organization, The Effervescent Collective. Filmed during a final performance, the dancers hypnotically move through the trees and foliage at a state park in Baltimore and in the last flickering moments build a boat and float away on it. One feels a sense of immediacy, of having one chance to get it right. With layers of imagery and a careful and innovative attention to soundtrack—she sometimes makes her own sound equipment—Rorison’s work needs more than one viewing to grasp its quiet beauty. Preceding the films will be a musical performance from Portland-based musician Geneva Snyder, a multimedia artist who presents tape and electronics-based sound performances.
