About This Screening

This is our small ode to the mystery of the sea. Two evenings through which we wade and wonder what the water said. In the intimacy of a small gallery space atop a former crabbing boat, we explore both the vastness and the minuteness of the sea, its terrific creatures and its majesty. Three filmmakers come to the surface:  French filmmaker, marine scientist, and friend of the Surrealists Jean Painlevé, American avant-garde filmmaker David Gatten, and Canadian artist Alex Mackenzie (who will be in attendance). Expect seahorses and dancing sea urchins, ocean water-manipulated film stock, and an inspired double projection performance about the tidal zones and marine life off the shores of Western Canada. This program will take place on a boat (in December) at gallery 12128 Boat Space, so please dress accordingly. 12128, managed and directed by Kyle Thompson and Caitlin Ducey, is a contemporary exhibition space located on the Labrador, a decommissioned Bering Sea crab fishing vessel moored in Portland, Oregon. Please allow adequate travel time (~ 30 min. from within Portland) and be sure to bring plenty of comfortable and warm clothing and be prepared to walk on a dock to board the boat. If you require assistance, please let us know in advance and send us an email at info@cinemaproject.org.  Directions to 12128 (From I-5 Northbound) Take exit 302B (405-South/30-W exit) across the Fremont Bridge.
Take exit 3 (US 30) (just at the end of the bridge) towards NW Industrial Area/St. Helens.
Follow the 30-W for about 7 miles and take a right on NW Marina Way.
Turn right into Multnomah Yacht Harbor—it’s the first right turn after Fred’s Marina.
Park in the gravel parking lot next to the ramp that leads to the harbor area.
Continue through the gate and walk down the ramp.
Follow the dock to the right towards the Labrador (the largest boat in the area).
